Thee-tronS is a great option for SUVs regardless of the powertrain. Although not as sporty and agile as a sedan, the etron S would keep up with similar S models like the SQ7 or SQ8 when driving on twisty mountain roads.

Thee-tronS is very attractive considering its quiet, efficient, and quick tri-motor powertrain. Although we couldn’t test it in urban environments, the etron S is worth adding to The Audi range.

Audi worked hard behind the scenes to make minor tweaks and changes for its Q5 facelift. These all make for an appealing luxury SUV, even in tough segments. The brand improved its family tourer’s value and tech capabilities, which were in danger of becoming obsolete. The Sport is our pick for the best equipment at an affordable price.

Audi E-Tron

Here is where the etron S shines. It should be more engaging and exciting than the regular etron. Audi’s e-tronS shined during our test drive. It displayed a powerful powertrain and a well-built chassis, making for an exciting experience.

The 320kW/850Nm acceleration feels fast even in the standard-setting. But, if you change the gear selector to the sports setting, you get the motors’ full 370kW/973Nm performance. This allows for a very rapid acceleration every time you press the accelerator.

However, straight-line performance is only one part of the equation. Audi S models must excel at cornering to be truly authentic. Audi developed electronic torque vectoring to assist in turning. This uses the separate gearboxes from the rear motors to transmit power to the rear wheels if necessary.

This effectively replaces the multiple Audi differentials on its petrol and diesel-powered Quattro model models. The rear motor combined with the single front motor for all-wheel traction is clever. Thee-tronS also has steering wheel-mounted paddles, which allow you to adjust the brakes on the go. Although it sounds like a scam, these paddles can be used to customize the regen as you go.

For example, if traffic is slow and driving to work, you can tap the accelerator to increase your energy. But if the traffic moves quickly or you turn onto the motorway, you can tap the paddle to accelerate without slowing down.

The SUV’s weight of 2580kg is the biggest impact on the performance and handling of the etron S. The adaptive air suspension works to keep that mass on the road, so you can feel it when you slow down for corners or in bends. The tires are very stable, and the steering is smooth, so it is easy to adjust to the weight.

Are you familiar with the Q5? There will not be any major changes for those who have. It’s a large SUV with a powerful 2.0-liter engine. Although the Q5 is inoffensive, it’s not an exciting experience behind the wheel of its smaller-powered variants.

Although we could not test out the 50 TDI S-Line, I can report that both 2.0-liter turbo options have been well refined to make this large SUV a competent and comfortable family tourer.

Audi went to great lengths to highlight both variants’ 0 to 100 km/h sprint times. But I couldn’t get along with them that way. They are fast on straight lines, but it isn’t easy to understand the SUV’s bulk when you need torque at freeway speeds or want to make the most out of curvy roads.

The engines are both quiet, but the suspension tune is non-active and does an amazing job of keeping them both comfortable and in control. The diesel engine can be prone to lag. Although the stop-start system has made efforts to lessen its impact, it can cause you to lose precious torque when you start at lights, roundabouts, or T-junctions. This is where the petrol option shines, as it proved to be responsive and smooth on our test loop.

The dual-clutch was easy to get up and running once it was. It had extremely fast shifts and ratios chosen at the right times. This car’s steering is very well suited. It is computer-assisted. In its default mode, it is pleasantly light. Sport mode increases the ratio to give the driver enough bite and responsiveness.

This is where Sport mode deserves special mention because it’s a very good one. You will feel a more firm ride thanks to the adaptive suspension package. The adaptive suspension was tested in the 40 TDI. It’s a very expensive option (3385). It removed some of the harsher moments from the standard ride and added dynamism to the cabin.

Even the stock suspension works well with the all-wheel-drive system. This will undoubtedly help with the car’s solid road feel and confident grip. These parts make the Q5 an ideal family car. It is well placed between its main rivals, the Mercedes Benz GLC being more luxurious and the BMW X3 having a more sporty side.
