Tesla Hiring Manager
As a former Tesla recruiter tells it, Elon Musk was the final hurdle for any individuals who applied for a position at Tesla. Marissa Peretz, an ex-Tesla recruiter, claims that no one was hired at Tesla without the blessing of CEO Elon Musk.
As a former Tesla employee, she can’t say for sure if the automaker’s CEO, Elon Musk, still approves of every single employee. The fact is that this was the situation under Peretz’s leadership.
For example, she recalls a recent campaign to hire up to 2,000 people for a brand-new Tesla manufacturing facility.
There were no exceptions; she told Business Insider. “When we went to class, people had to write a short bio for each one of them. The custodian. The people that put everything together. Workers at the cafeteria.”
Tesla expanded from 200 to 16,000 personnel during Peretz’s tenure. According to her, in 2010, it was less well known than it is now. As a result, she spent more time doing headhunts than she did sorting through tens of thousands of resumes.
At the time, she thought it was like “selling a dream.”
“Brand equity was not yet established. The value of our shares was completely unknown to us at the time.”
This resulted in an emphasis on recruiting new staff members.
As she put it, Elon is “obsessed” with bringing on top-tier talent. “The recruiting pressure was on.”
It would take roughly two months to fill just one position; therefore, the process would be:
Preliminary screenings and discussions
For each role, do a screening of five to 15 people.
Get to know each other. Most of these were centred on the candidate’s accomplishments and background. Peretz explained that the purpose of the interview was to determine a person’s technical talents and potential career path.
Increased interaction with a hiring manager at a higher level
If the initial talk went well, go further into the person’s past. ‘
The next step was an interview with a recruiting manager, who probed the candidate on technical and cultural issues. Recruiters also dug deep into the variables that could influence each employment, such as the need for relocation and the amount of money offered.
A personal interview at the location
The on-site interview was the next step after an applicant passed the first screening process.
Following their flight, it’d be a very stressful day for them. Peretz said this, too.
Many interviews were scheduled for the day, including an entire Tesla panel. Throughout the day, candidates would be assessed on their problem-solving abilities and technical knowledge.
Make an impact on the CEO
It was only a matter of time until the candidate made it to Musk’s attention.
Musk interviewed some candidates face-to-face and others over the phone, depending on the position. There was an essay requirement for everyone else who applied for jobs at Tesla.
For him to interview someone, she explained, “We had to pitch him first.” As a result, he was extremely demanding and would lash out at us whenever we didn’t answer his questions.
The recruiting team would lay forward all the reasons why the candidate was a good fit. Those had to impress everyone they met during the employment process because the recruiting team would only support candidates they genuinely cared about.
It’s easy to get your ego injured when someone says things like, “This person’s not remarkable enough,” or “Find someone else” to you because of the way he pushes back. “You start to learn from your scars. His team’s ideas were welcomed as long as they could back them up with evidence.”
Tesla Recruitment Selection Questions and Answers
How does the interviewing process work at Tesla?
Following phone interviews with a recruiter, the hiring manager, and a possible coworker, an onsite interview with approximately 6-8 people in a group with a 30-minute presentation and approximately 15 minutes of group Q&A. Then there were 30-60 minute interviews with each of the 6-8 persons I presented to.
How long does it take to get employed at Tesla from start to finish? What are the steps involved?
I applied for the position of Service Technician in Norway and went through three very professional interviews over four weeks. I received an email from a recruiter team member in London congratulating me on progressing this far in the recruitment process, so they asked for references and papers, which I immediately provided, and another email telling me that the recruiter member would contact me for further information on how to proceed, and it’s been five business days.
When does Tesla conduct drug tests during the employment process? Will I be informed in advance?
So an email from Tesla claims Tesla does not test for THC unless required by law. I’m in California with my medical Marijuana licence I use purely for nighttime sleep; otherwise, I’d be up for a decent bit. Would it be good the test said nine-panel + no THC? Any confirmation
What if you’re caught consuming marijuana on the job at Tesla? Have you been fired? Is there any probation? Are temporary Tesla employees treated differently than permanent Tesla employees hired through Manpower?
If you are caught, it will be terminated. Yes, I was fired. I work full-time for Tesla. Yes, everything is different.
